Upton Sinclair was born September 1878 into a poor family. However, he experienced the novelty of the rich as part of his mother's side of the family was rich. Sinclair was able to experience and live in two different social classes at the time, part of his family in poverty and the other in riches. Much of this inspired his writings. Sinclair was a famous muckraker, someone who exposes corruption and scandal, due to his writings of American poverty. Sinclair's writing style can be described as naturalism: the application of scientific principals and detachment when studying humans. This is especially seen in The Jungle, where while Sinclair makes us feel emotions, he himself is detached.
