Much of the criticism towards The Jungle is aimed towards Upton Sinclair's strange and sometimes even gramatically wrong way of writing rather than the message he was trying to convey. Sinclair switches between different points of view throughout the book - sometimes even mid-sentence. While this can be interepreted as a strategy to pull certain emotions out of readers, many critics consider it gramatically wrong. Many critics also consider the characters to be very underdeveloped and one-dimensional. For example, Sinclair introduces many different types of characters but never builds upon their character and rather uses them to further the plot line. Most agree that it was an influential book which exposed corruption, however some critics say that it was an exegerated story which could not be classified as investigative journalism. |
